Chapter Ten

Seru came to Hassan’s house late at night as arranged. They went into an unused bure. There was a rope bed, a couple of wooden boxes, and a few empty hessian sacks, one covering the bed and the others heaped in a corner of the earth floor. Hassan sat on the bed after placing the lamp on one of the boxes. Seru positioned another to his liking and sat down. The night was quiet except for a few dogs barking and the occasional cricket chirp coming from the heap of rotting rice straw nearby.

Both knew what this meeting was about. Hassan had already spoken to Seru. They had time to think about the matter and met now to exchange their ideas and to agree on a plan.

Being a born conspirator, Hassan decided to have another look outside to ensure that there was no one within earshot before they started their discussions. Having satisfied himself, he returned and resumed his seat.

He said, “Seru, this is the big one. Are you sure you want to come with me?”

“Hassan, I have been with you before when we have done this kind of thing. No problems. I’ll be in it.”

“Okay. This is my idea about how to do it. You tell me what you think. The best opportunity we have is when he is going home in the afternoon, and the best place is somewhere on that hill near your village, where the huge trees almost overshadow the road, with the sharp bend at the top. There is a very big mango tree right at the top, next to the road. There is an ancient Fijian grave there too. That’s why the Fijians named it ‘Vale Ni Tevoro’, house of the devil”.

“Yeah, there are no houses anywhere near that spot, so it is usually deserted. People are afraid to walk there even in the daytime. It’s a scary sort of place. Yeah, that is the perfect spot. We could hide in the bushes. From there, we will have a good view of his car as it grinds up the hill. By the time it reaches the bend, it should have slowed right down, just where it will be close to us.”

“My thoughts exactly. That’s the place I had in mind. But remember, we will have to be on the other side of the road to be close to Chambers as he comes to the bend. Our side has a few houses in the way. So, we can’t go there and simply cross the road. To be safe, we will have to take the long way from the railway line. We can’t afford to be seen anywhere near the spot, going in or coming out, on the day we kill Chambers. Otherwise, the cops will suspect us straight away.”

He turned down the light a little and continued, “You will have to find out if we can get there through the jungle between the railway line and the road. I know a path goes in, but I don’t know how far.
